George Miyasaki’s early lithograps from the 1950s and 1960s are among the most experimental, multi-layered and colorfol of the Abstract
Exrpessionsts. In a spontaneous and painterly manner, Miyasaki layers soft forms over various fields of color.
In 2017, Miyasaki was included in Abstract Expressionism: Looking East from the Far West curated by Theresa Papanikolas at Honolulu Museum of Art, a breakthrough exhibition which sought to re-examine the profound influence of Asian art on Abstract Expressionism. Barred from the modern art canon for decades, Miyasaki and other underrepresented Asian American artists, including fellow Bay Area artist Ruth Asawa, have begun to receive overdue recognition for their work.
