Hudson River Diptych is based on the artist’s perspective from the 107th floor of New York’s World Trade Center at Center at night and looking toward New Jersey. For a number of years, Jacquette participated in an artists’ program that utilized spaces in the building. The Hudson River occupies the foreground of the prints, leading up to the fine white lines of the docks and buildings of the New Jersey Shore. The diptych is comprised of two unique perspectives of the view across the Hudson River as she tips the shorelines slightly to the left and right, respectively. In the left panel, Jacquette uses sinuous line enclosures to invoke forested or grassy areas with Ellis Island on the far left, while the right panel is dominated by the angular lines of buildings and dots of radiant light.

Begun in Maine in the summer of 2006, this woodcut is derived from pastels done over several nights from the World Trade Center that were created in 1999. The woodcutting process, deliberate and unforgiving in nature, led Jacquette to alter the reality of the view because of limitations that marked the distance between each line on the block. In making these interpretations, she encourages the viewer to infer the planes of several rooftops by revealing the bright lights around the edges. Her sixth major woodcut, Hudson River Diptych distills the view from the former World Trade Center into its most elemental parts, while highlighting the complexity of Jacquette’s perspective as she reworks the cityscape.
