Yvonne Jacquette’s woodcuts depict monochromatic nightscapes that render familiar cities mysterious. These nocturnes are reduced yet all-encompassing, simultaneously intimate and
remote. Working from several elevated vantage points, Jacquette creates urban views of New York City that are as immediately recognizable as they might be fictitious. Many are composite images in which she takes creative license to mix perspectives and architectural elements depending on her preference.
Working in the resistive process of hand-cutting wood, Jacquette achieves several contrasts: black and white, superficial and natural, complex and simple, movement and stasis. She spends a year or more hand-cutting the blocks for her woodcuts. Nightscape Woodcut and Mixed Heights are printed in black ink on Japanese Okawara paper, and she prefers this material for its natural contrast and ability to smoothly absorb the dense ink.
