Sultan’s iconic red poppy flowers are inspired by the paper poppies seen on the wreathes and lapels that emerged after
World War I to commemorate soldiers lost in battle. In Red Poppies, March 21 2012, these synthetic blooms are enlarged and emboldened in an image that is both sumptuous and spare. The black centers are flocked and add texture to the eight layers of red inks to create a lush, rich screen print that highlights Sultan’s sense of materiality and his fresh approach to the still life.
