Sultan is a painter, sculptor and printmaker who rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the “New
Image” movement. Sultan infuses the still life tradition with his particular contemporary sensibility: reducing the subject to its basic form, flattening pictorial space, using new materials and processes, and challenging preconceived notions of the subject. Sand Trumpet April 16 2008 and Black Trumpet April 2008 take on the simplified shapes of trumpet flowers. The use of lead and gold leaf on wood highlights Sultan’s sense of materiality and his fresh approach to the still life.
In September 2016, Sultan’s Disaster Paintings began a two-year tour of five American museums: Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, Florida; Museum of Modern Art in Forth Worth, Texas; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; and Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, Nebraska.
