In the 1980s and 90s, Sultan became well known for these small square-format still-life prints. In Sunflowers, September 17, 1996,
996, Sultan composes a cropped image of three boldly colored and wildly dynamic blossoms that engage in his signature style. Each ring of blazing, skirted petals revolves around heavy blackened orbs, reminiscent of Sultan’s iconic lemons. Sultan only made one sunflower image as a print, employing painterly elements and emphasizing the geometry of the flowers’ centers.
