De Kooning was a pioneering figure of Abstract Expressionism and one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Born in the Netherlands, de Kooning would become recognized as a leader of the New York School by the 1950s. Following his representational “Women” series in the early 1950s, de Kooning focused on abstraction until his death in 1997.

Although he made very few prints throughout his career, he made 24 black and white lithographs between 1970 and 1971 following a trip to Japan where he was exposed to calligraphy and Sumi brush painting (traditional Japanese ink and wash painting done with various concentrations of black ink). Ranging from sparse to layered and complex, these lithographs retain all of the wild gesture for which de Kooning is best known.
