Laurent de Brunhoff has only made eight original silkscreen prints in his entire career, all published byMary Ryan Gallery in
New York. All are pencil signed and numbered by the artist. In 1994, de Brunhoff spent a year working on four original silkscreen prints: The Cave of the Mammoth, At Celesteville-by-the-Sea, In the Wilderness, and The Portrait of Celeste.
In At Celesteville-by-the-Sea, on a bright, sunny day, King Babar and Queen Celeste stroll through a main street in Celesteville with their triplets - Pom, Flora and Alexander amongst a midday crowd of elephants and tourists who came from far away to see this beautiful port. Cousin Arthur and the Old Lady are on the balcony of a pink building, inspired by the Negresco Hotel in Nice, France. This image is based on an illustration for Babar’s Mystery by Laurent de Brunhoff from 1977. It is the only silkscreen that includes the architecture of Celesteville.
