Laurent de Brunhoff has only made eight original silkscreen prints in his entire career, all published by Mary Ryan Gallery
in New York. All are pencil signed and numbered by the artist. In 1994, de Brunhoff spent a year working on four original silkscreen prints: The Cave of the Mammoth, At Celesteville-by-the-Sea, In the Wilderness, and The Portrait of Celeste.
In The Cave of the Mammoth, we observe Babar and Celeste on an expedition with the Old Lady's cousin and a team of scientists. Their rafts follow the underground river that feeds into Celesteville Lake, passing a statue of Babar's wooly mammoth ancestor. This image is based on an original illustration for the book, Babar and the Professor by Laurent de Brunhoff from 1956.
