Laurent de Brunhoff has only made eight original silkscreen prints in his entire career, all published by Mary Ryan Gallery
in New York. All are pencil signed and numbered by the artist.
In 1994, de Brunhoff spent a year working on four original silkscreen prints: The Cave of the Mammoth, At Celesteville-by-the-Sea, In the Wilderness, and The Portrait of Celeste.
In the Wilderness shows Babar's athletic prowess as he canoes downstream through the scenic West, while two friendly bears wave hello. The image is based on de Brunhoff’s own love of the outdoors and his great appreciation for the American Western landscape, particularly in Utah and Colorado. This image does not appear in any Babar books, but exists only in this original print.
