The Portrait of Celeste,

1994
Silkscreen
20 3/4 x 29 1/4 inches (52.7 x 74.3 cm)
Edition of 100
Laurent de Brunhoff has only made eight original silkscreen prints in his entire career, all published by Mary Ryan Gallery in New York. All are pencil signed and numbered by the artist. In 1994, de Brunhoff spent a year working on four original silkscreen prints: The Cave of the Mammoth, At Celesteville-by-the-Sea, In the Wilderness, and The Portrait of Celeste.

In The Portrait of Celeste we see Babar as the artist in his studio. Queen Celeste and baby Isabelle sit for a portrait while the triplets Pom, Flora, and Alexander paint on the studio floor with Cousin Arthur admiring their work. A Cubist inspired portrait of an elephant is on one studio wall as is a portrait of a baby elephant on a rocking horse, inspired by a family photo of Laurent de Brunhoff as a young boy. This image is based on an illustration for Babar’s Book of Color by Laurent de Brunhoff from 1984.

Published by Mary Ryan Gallery.
