Yvonne Jacquette’s Two Ferries Passing series is a meditation on the strangely peaceful motif of two ferry boats crossing one
ing one another, and the wakes each boat leaves behind. The imagery of ships and water occupied an important place in Jacquette’s oeuvre, and she made her first two prints of passing ferries in 1982. The ships were observed from her old studio in the World Trade Center, sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, which had a view of the Hudson River.
These initial prints of identical composition sparked an interest in experimenting with color, and Jacquette went on to create a number of variations of the original Two Ferries Passing etchings, using several inks and plates to invoke different moods. Using a combination of red, blue, and green inks, Jacquette plays on the alternatively melancholic and contemplative experience of watching from a distance two ships silently passing one another. With this visual experiment, Jacquette demonstrates the remarkable power of variation and color. The complete portfolio includes the original two prints, and eight of the subsequent variations.
